November 5 to 14, 2017

In Tanzania the Maasai have shared the endless plains of the Serengeti with endemic lion and elephant for eons. Journey into the dawn of time as you pass the stoic red-robed Maasai boy herding his cattle and descend 2,000 feet by Land Rover beneath the cloud cover into Ngorongoro Crater, Africa’s ‘Garden of Eden.’ The amazing wildlife you see crossing the diverse terrain is only enhanced by a visit to Oldupai Gorge, where Mary Leakey discovered one of the earliest fossils of humankind. Home to both humans and beast since the beginning of time, the magic of the Serengeti continues to thrill.

Prices per person:

Day 3 – Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge. (B, L, D)

Start your safari with a drive to Lake Manyara, an ornithological paradise inhabited by over 350 bird species. Elusive, tree-climbing lions lay in wait on branches while eagles, storks, swifts, and swallows glide along spectacular cliffs. The indigenous trees are clustered with baboon and blue vervet monkey, while bushbuck antelope and elephant congregate below. Consider joining your fellow travelers outside of the vehicles at the nearby hippo pool, located on a scenic freshwater stream. Your home for the night is the Lake Manyara Serena Lodge, on the edge of the Mto-wa-Mbu escarpment, overlooking the Great Rift Valley and the stunning Manyara soda lake.

Days 4/5/6 – Serengeti National Park

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge (B, L, D Daily)

Get set for a scenically spectacular drive to the Serengeti – the crown jewel of Tanzania’s protected areas. The Serengeti has come to symbolize paradise to all, including the local Maasai, who have grazed their cattle on the vast grassy plains for generations. Watch as cheetah, lion, leopard and hyena keep a keen eye on the herds, waiting for a window of opportunity. Explore the open plains for giraffe, topi antelope, buffalo, and Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle. Look for elephant and hippo pools inhabited with clusters of African water birds. Perhaps even soar through the skies on a balloon safari for exhilarating views (at additional cost). Relax for the evening at your hotel, enjoying breathtaking vistas of sweeping grasslands and the unspoiled wild landscape of the Serengeti plains.

Days 7/8 – Oldupai Gorge / Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge. (B, L, D Daily)

Discover Oldupai Gorge, the “Cradle of Mankind” where Louis and Mary Leaky uncovered the early origins of modern man. Tour the museum to learn about their paleoanthropological methods and remarkable finds. The next morning, you’ll descend almost 2,000 feet into the Ngorongoro Crater — an extinct volcano and World Heritage Site — for a treasure trove of wildlife and scenery. Swaggering prides of black-mane lion roam the grasslands, home to large herds of wildebeest, buffalo, hartebeest, eland and zebra trailed by hungry hyena. Protected around the clock, this is the best area to see the majestic and critically endangered black rhino. Return to the rim of the crater and visit a Maasai village to learn about this fascinating culture that has thrived through the millennia, retaining their ancient traditions and veneration of nature. At your home for the evening, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, you too will exist in perfect harmony with the natural environment and the wildlife that inhabit it.

Day 9 – Ngorongoro / Arusha / Enroute

(B,L,Meals Aloft)

Enjoy a last look over the crater at breakfast before heading out. Today, you’ll travel southeast through the highlands and the Karatu district. Let yourself get lost in the sprawling golden landscape of the wheat plains and coffee plantations, which end in a spectacular sheer cliff wall along the road to Arusha. Follow an expert guide through Shanga Shangaa, a place whose name translates to “Beads Amazing”, in Swahili. The Shanga Shangaa employs 42 disabled, mute, and deaf workers whose homes are near Arusha. Afterwords, you’ll be treated to lunch and a dayroom at the Lake Duluti Serena Lodge. This evening, transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport to catch your overnight flight back to Detroit, via Amsterdam.
